Rec Room Wellness Outreach at Ikoyi Correction Center

In July, something beautiful happened. Rec Room Wellness partnered with BITS by Mani and the Nigerian Correctional Service for our maiden outreach program. We facilitated mental wellness-centered sessions at the BITS Champion Academy, an initiative supporting correctional facility inmates on their journey toward reintegration into society.

BITS by Mani – Sowing Hope in Unlikely Places

Founded in 2017, BITS (Bringing In The Sheaves) by Mani is rooted in the belief that every person, no matter their past, deserves the chance to rediscover dignity, rebuild purpose, and reintegrate into society with hope. Through faith, education, and community-driven initiatives, BITS by Mani has been changing the way incarcerated individuals view themselves and their future.

Three Sessions, Many Lessons

Throughout July, our team facilitated three powerful sessions focused on mental health education and emotional resilience.

We explored:

  • What mental health really means and why it matters in daily life.
  • Common mental illnesses. How to recognize and manage them.
  • Self-care and how to build a lifestyle of Mental Wellness.
  • Community care and being a brother’s keeper.
  • Emotional regulation, with tools to pause, reflect, and choose healthier responses.

But these sessions weren’t just about learning—they were about experiencing healing in small, tangible ways. Together we practiced:

  • Breathing exercises to slow down racing thoughts.
  • Gratitude meditation to find light in the present moment.
  • Self-encouragement affirmations to nurture hope.
  • Fun activities that brought the room to laughter.
  • And other mindfulness practices that gave participants the space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.

Voices of Transformation

The impact of these moments was best captured in the words of participants themselves:

“I thank you for all what you told me today. I have learnt how to behave and calm down my anger, and help others with their anger.”

“I have learnt how to control my emotions in various ways, not make decisions when emotions are high or low. It is better to ponder over it and come out with good results.”

These reflections remind us that even in the most difficult environments, the human heart remains open to learning, healing, and growth.

Why This Matters

For many inmates, incarceration can feel like an erasure of identity. Yet through intentional spaces like these, seeds of resilience, self-awareness, and hope for a different future are planted. By merging education with compassion, this program is helping to restore not just mental health, but also dignity and self-worth.

Looking Forward

Our sessions at the BITS Champion Academy mark the beginning of a transformational journey for the participants and for our collective mental wellness advocacy. At Rec Room Wellness, we believe no one should walk the path of mental health alone. Thus, we will continue to take community advocacy and mental wellness outreaches into more locations and diverse settings.
