Roots Before Fruits: Leveraging Community for Self-Care while Advocating for Change

On April 18th, 2025, Dr. Oluwatoni Adebisi led a wellness session at the Future Physicians for Change Conference organized by the American Medical Students Association in Washington, D.C., on the topic “Roots Before Fruits: Leveraging Community for Self-Care while Advocating for Change.” The session encouraged attendees to explore how personal wellness and community support can sustain those fighting for justice and positive change.

Workshop Highlights

  • Attendees reflected on the emotional toll of advocacy work and how to stay grounded amid social and political challenges.
  • Dr. Adebisi shared that resilience is built over time and strengthened through supportive systems and community.
  • Participants discussed the importance of compassion, connection, and shared purpose in sustaining advocacy.
  • Practical strategies were shared: practicing compassion, connecting socially, sharing self-care, prioritizing rest, and advocating with others.
  • Attendees joined small groups by advocacy focus, reflecting on sustaining emotional health and identifying community-based wellness practices.
