Overcoming Failure: Event Recap

“Failure is not the opposite of success; it is part of success.”

Last week at Rec Room Wellness, we gathered to discuss a topic that hit close to home for everyone: ‘Overcoming Failure’. The evening started with a mindfulness activity, which got everybody mentally and emotionally receptive. Then we defined failure and anchored our discussion in two grounding truths:

  1. Nobody sets out to fail, but it is an inevitable phenomenon as we go through life.
  2. Failure isn’t set in stone. You can rise above it.

The facilitator touched on the different emotions that come with failure, defeat, shame, disappointment, and self-doubt. Fear of failure can also lead to decision paralysis, fear of applying for opportunities, staying small or comfortable, and, most times, perfectionism.

She spoke further on three ways to overcome failure, which are

  • Regulating your emotional response
  • Reframe failure
  • Leverage failure

These three cardinals are crucial because they help us dream again and rise above the current, temporary feeling of failure. The evening concluded with participants sharing lived experiences of failure leading to success, and then we played a ‘story scramble’ game where we rewrote a tale of defeat into one of hope and resilience, a reminder that failure is temporary and a needed stepping stone to success.

At Rec Room Wellness, we’re building spaces where resilience and vulnerability aren’t just taught; they’re experienced together.
