Navigating Grief: Event Recap

Have you ever had a jacket in freezing weather and had it get taken away from you?
That’s the easiest way to describe grief. Grief is the experience of coping with a loss or a sense of normalcy you have always had. Last week at Rec Room Wellness, we discussed a topic most are well acquainted with but don’t know how to go about: navigating grief.

The evening started with the facilitator taking us through rhythmic mindful exercises that helped us stay grounded and present with our emotions as the evening progressed.

Grief is often in layers and levels and it is solely dependent on the individual experiencing the grief. We have acute grief, anticipatory grief, delayed grief, etc. But learning to navigate these emotions takes more precedence.

Our facilitator for the evening took us through ways NOT to grieve:

  • Do not isolate yourself
  • Do not pretend like nothing has happened.
  • Don’t perform your grief or healing journey.
  • Don’t put a timeline to your grief

Here are safe ways we explored to navigate grief:

  • Name what you are feeling whether by journaling or speaking to a trusted person
  • Adopt daily simple and achievable routines
  • Take things one day at a time
  • Connect to support systems
  • Take a break to feel your feelings

The evening ended with a firm reminder that grief should not be rushed or forced; instead, give yourself grace and all the love you deserve.

A worksheet that allows community members to walk through this topic privately was also shared.

At Rec Room Wellness we are committed to being emotionally grounded and aware while navigating hard topics.
