At our last community event, we busted the “Sleep is for the weak” myth, stressing that quality rest is, in fact, vital for mental stability and overall wellness. The session began with a simple yet powerful mindfulness activity: deep five-second breathing to centre our minds.

Our wellness instructor offered a crucial lesson: “Sleep is not a reward. It’s an avenue for your body to rejuvenate and rebuild itself.” We learnt that adults require 7–9 hours of sleep. The consequences of deprivation are significant: even one poor night causes mood swings and brain fog, while chronic lack of sleep weakens immunity and increases the risk of depression and long-term heart and metabolic problems.
The event offered practical solutions across different areas. Proper sleep hygiene includes fixed sleep/wake times, maintaining a cool, dark room, and implementing a digital curfew. For bedtime rituals, simple activities like stretching, journaling, or meditation were recommended to relax the body. Finally, optimising lifestyle factors, especially a nutritious diet and appropriate exercise, was highlighted as essential for getting a good night’s rest.

The event closed on a light-hearted note with a fun group activity: sharing the most chaotic dreams participants have ever had.
The message was clear and resounding: sleep is not a reward but an absolute necessity.
At Rec Room Wellness, we are championing the message of quality sleep.
